The Winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2013 – Maja Säfström – 100 Days of Drawings

Offecct has today announced winner of the prestigious Offecct Prize 2013 in the form of a grant of SEK 10 000 and a diploma.

Offecct has the pleasure to present that the winner of the Offecct Prize 2013 is Maja Säfström with the project “100 Days of Drawings.”

The Winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2013: Maja Säfström. Project: 100 Days of Drawings.

The Winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2013: Maja Säfström. Project: 100 Days of Drawings.

Säfström’s starting point in this project was to create “frames for creativity” in the doing rather than in the thinking. This resulted in a daily production of 100 abstract drawings. The drawings have been an investigation of when, how and why we experience depth in images. These questions sparked a curiosity about the fascinating relationship between two-dimensional pictures and our experience of three-dimensional spatiality and architecture.

The motivation of the Jury:

“In a time when architecture becomes increasingly digital, more and more rational and calculated, 100 days of drawings risk to appear as an anachronism. But no. One hundred carefully produced drawings, one for each day during the exam period, prove to be more important than any computer generated full scale model and illustrate with force the significance of sometimes looking back in order to look ahead. The analog tools have sharpened both the idea as well as the expression and the drawings radiate of the hands’ revived desire to explore. The result is a wonder of retained consistency, well captured in the typewriter font typical for architectural exhibitions, simply framed pencil drawings and the traditional drawing cabinets that escalate against an exposé of architectural representations throughout history. The next step, if the jury may decide, would be a three dimensional counterpart: 100 days of buildings.”

Maja Säfström has studied at the KTH School of Architecture in Stockholm. She has also worked at an architectural firm in Shanghai. After the exam Säfström has returned to her own firm, Arkitekturfabriken.

The Offecct Prize was established in 2010 in order to reward a young promising architectural student at KTH School of Architecture in Stockholm, Sweden, in Offecct’s ambition to promote the next generation of architects.

In 20 years Offecct has grown to become a major furniture manufacturer with high design ambitions, which is evident in the many international design awards that Offecct has received. Offecct works closely with architects both as designers and as clients, and sees the Offecct Prize as a way to honor good architecture.

The winner of the 2013 Offecct Prize was selected by a jury consisting of: Jannice Johansson, Tengbom, Jury President; Daniel Johansson, KTH School of Architecture; Mark Isitt, Architectural Writer; Johan Larsson, Koncept; and Frida Hugosson, Offecct.

The five projects nominated to the 2013 Offecct Prize were:

Eva Johansson. Project: The Sand Catcher.
Carl Johan Malmberg. Project: In Containment.
Linnea Mattsson. Project: Reuse.
Cesilia Silvasti. Project: Force and Field – The Folded Façade.
Maja Säfström. Project: 100 Days of Drawings.

All the nominated projects are on display in Offecct’s showroom at Torsgatan 13, Stockholm, between June 12 and August 31 (closed between July 15 and August 4).

by Linnea Mattsson
Supervisors: Teres Selberg and Leif Brodersen

“This project aims to show how we can use resources that are considered to be discarded to create something useful. The project has three parts. 1. “Story Behind – a Tale of Materials”, political and environmental. 2. “Collecting of Waste”, showing how much material, still fully usable, is discarded but also investigates how it can be used in the context of architecture. 3. “Reaction!” the practical part, a full-scale built proposal where the three parts of the project are tied together.”

“This project is an investigation in how to adapt and inform two existing housing structures from the Million Program era in Bredäng, south of Stockholm. The aim was to create continuity and complexity in these ridged functionalist housing structures. The method was a form finding process using textile foam rubber as an intermediating object of information. It is a speculative project encouraging these buildings to continue the story of new ways to build good housing in the future.”

The Winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011

OFFECCT has today announced Valentina Soana as the winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011 in the form of a grant of SEK 10 000 and a diploma.

Valentina Solana

The OFFECCT Prize has been established in order to reward a young promising architectural student at the School of Architecture at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, in OFFECCT’s ambition to promote the next generation of architects.

In 20 years OFFECCT has grown to become a major furniture manufacturer with high design ambitions, which is evident in the many international design awards that OFFECCT has received. OFFECCT works closely with architects both as designers and as clients, and sees the OFFECCT Prize as a way to honor

The winner of the 2011 OFFECCT Prize was selected by a jury consisting of: Thomas Sandell, Architect, sandellsandberg, Jury President; Jannice Johansson, Architect, Tengbom; Mark Isitt, Architectural Writer; Anna Pang, Architect/Lecturer,
KTH School of Architecture and Patrik Persson, Sales Manager, OFFECCT.

The winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011 is Valentina Soana with the project “Ornamental Hypertrophy.”

”The proposal ”Ornamental Hypertrophy” is a challenging and inspiring project. It reconsiders the traditional architectural concepts such as ornamentation, geometry and space, and the presentation material deftly conveys a vision of an enchanting architecture. The project’s location and program is an expansion of an existing structure in San Lorenzo in Rome. The new building serves as an art center and is an extremely complex spatial and physical design. Like an organism with a colored surface, it moves between, in and around the existing buildings. With full control over the situation, the tools and the creations, the creator created qualities that challenge and discuss what architecture can be.”

Valentina Soana has studied architecture at the University of Rome, the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, Madrid and at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She has also been an intern at EMERGENT in Los Angeles.

All the nominated projects are on display all through the summer in OFFECCT’s showroom at Torsgatan 13, Stockholm.
