Offecct Showroom in Stockholm’s Flat Iron Building

Svenska Dagbladet, one of Sweden’s most influential daily newspapers, recently featured an article about the Flat Iron Building in Stockholm, where our Stockholm Showroom is situated. Below a facsimile of the article featuring a photo of our conference room in our showroom. Please find the article here >>

The building, which resembles an iron, is designed by Inga Varg from Rosenbergs arkitekter. The distance between the walls at the very tip of the building is so small that one can touch both sides at the same time. This design was chosen in accordance with the site, which is entrained between the road and the railway, in order to use the space available as effectively as possible.

The building is constructed in concrete, which was quite controversial at the time of the first drawings. However, it was very suitable for the site due to the high demands on fast construction and high safety of the building the close proximity with the railroad required. In order to make the facade more interesting the concrete was balanced with glass, giving the building a modern look.

If you happen to be in our Stockholm neigbourhood, you are most welcome to visit our Showroom at Torsgatan 13!

Dendron Research Station

“The Dendron Research Station is set in a tropical rainforest. The site of the station is an extinct volcano with a collapsed caldera found in Papua New Guinea.

The research station aims at aiding scientists in the field of canopy research, where the work of the scientists is mainly about cataloguing existing species and discover new such for the sake of science.

Dendron is suspended in mid-air more than 45 meters up in the canopy layer of the rainforest. It utilizes the liana system found in the forest, and derives its building material and techniques from the vernacular architecture found in Papua New Guinea.”

The focus of the university programs departure from the driving forces of Åre; sports, design, tourism and entrepreneurship. Since Åre is and will continue to develop as a living society year-round it is important to attract new inhabitants. A university located next to one of Åre’s best slopes, and characterized by the lifestyle associated with Åre, would be attractive to young people from across the country.”

  1. Bra jobb!

6 Characters

“Near the inlet of Saltsjön there is a small untouched place at the bottom of a mighty tower. There is still time before the place takes on its intended task for the infrastructure of the Kingdom. That is when they come, the six characters. Perhaps they came alongside the water or on the roads. They are now standing at the slump, a small ensemble acting as residential area. People will inhabit them. They will find their rooms and their movements. Maybe they will stay longer or maybe they are gone tomorrow.”

Soundwave Swell Exhibited at MoMA, New York

#MoMA #design

Our sound absorbent SOUNDWAVE SWELL is being exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York within the context of the exhibition Born out of Necessity.

Soundwave-swell-moma

SOUNDWAVE SWELL is designed by Teppo Asikainen and absorbes sounds in the uppers upper frequency range (500 Hz and above). These panels help reduce disturbing reflections of environmental sounds, and is Eco labelled with the Nordic Swan.

Soundwave-swell-moma-2

The exhibition began on March 2nd and will continue until January 29th next year. This is the manifesto for Born out of Necessity:

Showcasing objects that adhere to the traditional view of design as a tool for problem-solving, Born out of Necessity offers close examination of the problems themselves—whether urgent, foreseen, or imagined. From objects that respond to pressing needs in developing countries to new solutions that are tailored to the urban environment, the exhibition examines how design intervenes across a range of experiences, including medical emergencies and natural disasters. Other objects demonstrate how products created to address specific challenges for people with disabilities can provide solutions that improve everyone’s life. Drawing on the narrative power of design, Born out of Necessity addresses a host of complex cultural developments, such as the need to incorporate environmental responsibility in everyday life, our attempts to marry ancient religious beliefs with contemporary mores, and the desire to anticipate and prevent technological and ecological quagmires.

The Winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011

#OFFECCT #KTH #architecture

OFFECCT has today announced Valentina Soana as the winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011 in the form of a grant of SEK 10 000 and a diploma.

Valentina Solana

Valentina Solana

The OFFECCT Prize has been established in order to reward a young promising architectural student at the School of Architecture at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, in OFFECCT’s ambition to promote the next generation of architects.

In 20 years OFFECCT has grown to become a major furniture manufacturer with high design ambitions, which is evident in the many international design awards that OFFECCT has received. OFFECCT works closely with architects both as designers and as clients, and sees the OFFECCT Prize as a way to honor
good architecture.

The winner of the 2011 OFFECCT Prize was selected by a jury consisting of: Thomas Sandell, Architect, sandellsandberg, Jury President; Jannice Johansson, Architect, Tengbom; Mark Isitt, Architectural Writer; Anna Pang, Architect/Lecturer,
KTH School of Architecture and Patrik Persson, Sales Manager, OFFECCT.

The winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011 is Valentina Soana with the project “Ornamental Hypertrophy.”

”The proposal ”Ornamental Hypertrophy” is a challenging and inspiring project. It reconsiders the traditional architectural concepts such as ornamentation, geometry and space, and the presentation material deftly conveys a vision of an enchanting architecture. The project’s location and program is an expansion of an existing structure in San Lorenzo in Rome. The new building serves as an art center and is an extremely complex spatial and physical design. Like an organism with a colored surface, it moves between, in and around the existing buildings. With full control over the situation, the tools and the creations, the creator created qualities that challenge and discuss what architecture can be.”

Valentina Soana has studied architecture at the University of Rome, the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, Madrid and at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She has also been an intern at EMERGENT in Los Angeles.

All the nominated projects are on display all through the summer in OFFECCT’s showroom at Torsgatan 13, Stockholm.

More about Valentina’s project in a previous blog post >>
