Offecct and the Nordic Swan

Sustainability and high environmental standards are very important to us here at Offecct. Many of our furniture are labeled with the Nordic Swan; a label that helps consumers chose products that are respectful of our limited resources and of nature.

The Nordic Swan

nordic eco label

The Nordic Swan is an evolving concept that is revised regularly. This means that we can never relax, but must constantly make sure we stay in tune with new technologies and materials that allow us to become even more environmental friendly and improve our products. Right now the label criteria are being increased, and they will enter into force at New Year’s.

Not only are many of our furniture labeled with the Nordic Swan, but our products are actually used at the office of the label. Here you can see the chair Cornflake designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune.

Learning about Lean

#lean

Lean production and administration is a philosophy of resource handling. The purpose is to identify all parts of a process that do not add value for the client, and eliminate them.

Here at OFFECCT we began to work with the concept of lean about one and a half years ago. We started in the production process, and the employees concerned had a course at the University College of Skövde.

OFFECCT-lean production

We learnt that there are ways to make the production more efficient and less resource-demanding while keeping the high quality of the end-product. The point is not to make the process as cheap as possible, but to eliminate everything that does not add value, and to eliminate the production of wastes. This is a great way to work towards a more environmentally friendly production process, something that is very important to us.

OFFECCT-lean production - sustainability

Now that we have seen how great lean production is, we also want to implement lean into our administration process. So our management team took a course in lean administration and is passing the examination this week.

Lean administration has taught us ways to make communication more effective and to reevaluate our administrative work process to identify small things that can end up making a great change and save resources. One such thing could be to decrease the amount of material that we buy, or to eliminate as much printing as possible. The concept Just-in-Time is useful in both lean production and administration. It simply means that the right thing should be at the right place at the right time. In administration this means for example to make sure that we place items we use continuously close to our workplace. Lean also teaches us to make decisions based on their long-term results rather than short-term financial benefits.

Bio-Based Plastics

#design #plastic #sustainability

A few weeks ago we visited the fair Muovi Plastics in Lahti, Finland. Plastic is an important material in the design of furniture, and at the fair several suppliers of biopolymers and biocomposites were present. Bio-based plastics are interesting from an environmental point of view, and we continuously monitor the branch and its developments as a part of our sustainability work.

OFFECCT-Muovi Plastics

Bio-based plastics, or bioplastics as they are often called, are derived from renewable sources, like vegetable fats and oils, corn and pea starch and microbiota. A few of these plastics are biodegradable.

The production of bioplastics is growing and presents a good environmentally friendly option to plastic made from oil and natural gas, but the production must not interfere and compete with the production of food, an inherent risk considering the resources of production. The best alternative here is when the plastic is produced with wastes from production or garbage. But the increased use of biofuels also produced from wastes affects the availability of bio-based plastics.

Corporate Social Responsibility Forum

#swgreen #swcsr

Recently OFFECCT’s QE manager Joachim Schubert participated at a forum in Gothenburg on the theme of CSR (corporate social responsibility) held by CSR Västsverige.

The forum brought together enterprises and students to explore the concept of CSR. The day began with a researcher talking about the concept and its meaning. The truth is that the concept is disputed among researchers, but all agree that it has to do with the responsibility corporations take within three areas; environment, society and economy.

Offecct Joachim Schubert

Offecct Joachim Schubert

Joachim talked to the audience about CSR Västsverige’s challenge OFFECCT was a part of in 2010, and the results of that challenge. Within the frame of the challenge, climate initiative 2010, OFFECCT chose three ways to improve their environmental responsibility. We streamlined our energy consumption, chose to use only wind and water power in our factory, and managed to decrease our use of paper with 50%.

To illustrate our commitment to the environment, Joachim showed the chair Louis IX to the audience. The chair is made out of recycled bottles. Like Joachim pointed out, the chair uses the most important material of the future – waste products.

Tomorrow Green – Today!

#swgreen #design #sustainability

This past week we participated at a conference with an environmental theme, namely Imorgon Grön (Swedish for “Tomorrow Green”). Swedish magazine Miljö&Utveckling held the conference in Stockholm, focusing on the challenge of combining profit making and environmental sustainability in companies.

iMORGON GRÖN

iMORGON GRÖN

The conference provided us with the opportunity to build on our existing knowledge within the area, to become inspired to push further in our environmental work and to network with other likeminded professionals.

Interesting trends discussed during the conference were the leasing of furniture to companies as well as the goal of the market providing solely eco branded products in the future.

Waste and Recycling

#OFFECCT #design #sustainability

Last week we visited the Fair Elmia Waste & Recycling in Jönköping, Sweden. Committed to maintaining our environmental standards, we want to be well-informed about the latest news within the area.

Elmia Waste and Recycling

Elmia Waste and Recycling

The Fair is the natural meeting place for waste management stakeholders. The visitors get a snapshot of an industry that is growing in importance every day. They are introduced to IT, waste disposal systems, new materials, sorting systems, vehicles, crushers, boilers, containers, receptacles and bags that can lead to more efficient waste management.

We found the question of ash recycling the most interesting at the Fair. Askungen (Cinderella in Swedish) Vital AB introduced the technology which allows for treatment of ashes after the burning of wood for energy purposes. The treated ashes are then disposed of in the forest, and work as natural and ecological manure. This not only allows for better and safer manure, but also takes care of the problem of the waste product that otherwise has to be put in long-term storage.

ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 – Periodic Visit by Bureau Veritas

In order to create and maintain a sustainable product cycle OFFECCT works hard to achieve constant improvements, not least by implementing quality and environmental management systems.

OFFECCT is certified in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 for quality management and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management, and during the early spring of 2011 Bureau Veritas made an inspection of how well OFFECCT adheres to these standards. Bureau Veritas is specialized in the inspection, analysis, audit, and certification of management systems in relation to regulatory or voluntary standards.

The result of the inspection was very positive and Bureau Veritas concluded that OFFECCT has got a well-functioning system that covers the requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. In the inspection protocol, Bureau Veritas note how OFFECCT’s employees and management – as well as the different functions such as procurement, product development and production – are characterized by continuous improvements.

Bureau Veritas

Bureau Veritas

We are delighted by the fact that Bureau Veritas has not had any serious remarks on our continous work to improve both quality and  environmental aspects since we were first certified according to ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 back in 2006.

In fact, the cooperation with Bureau Veritas helps us to offer our customers even better and more sustainable products.
