The Winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011

#OFFECCT #KTH #architecture

OFFECCT has today announced Valentina Soana as the winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011 in the form of a grant of SEK 10 000 and a diploma.

Valentina Solana

Valentina Solana

The OFFECCT Prize has been established in order to reward a young promising architectural student at the School of Architecture at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, in OFFECCT’s ambition to promote the next generation of architects.

In 20 years OFFECCT has grown to become a major furniture manufacturer with high design ambitions, which is evident in the many international design awards that OFFECCT has received. OFFECCT works closely with architects both as designers and as clients, and sees the OFFECCT Prize as a way to honor
good architecture.

The winner of the 2011 OFFECCT Prize was selected by a jury consisting of: Thomas Sandell, Architect, sandellsandberg, Jury President; Jannice Johansson, Architect, Tengbom; Mark Isitt, Architectural Writer; Anna Pang, Architect/Lecturer,
KTH School of Architecture and Patrik Persson, Sales Manager, OFFECCT.

The winner of the OFFECCT Prize 2011 is Valentina Soana with the project “Ornamental Hypertrophy.”

”The proposal ”Ornamental Hypertrophy” is a challenging and inspiring project. It reconsiders the traditional architectural concepts such as ornamentation, geometry and space, and the presentation material deftly conveys a vision of an enchanting architecture. The project’s location and program is an expansion of an existing structure in San Lorenzo in Rome. The new building serves as an art center and is an extremely complex spatial and physical design. Like an organism with a colored surface, it moves between, in and around the existing buildings. With full control over the situation, the tools and the creations, the creator created qualities that challenge and discuss what architecture can be.”

Valentina Soana has studied architecture at the University of Rome, the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, Madrid and at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She has also been an intern at EMERGENT in Los Angeles.

All the nominated projects are on display all through the summer in OFFECCT’s showroom at Torsgatan 13, Stockholm.

“The thesis is exploring the potential of the ornament conceived as inhabitable space, exuberant, blissful in opulence, flamboyant. The coexistence of opposite elements generates sensations that are overlapping, intertwining and blurring, generating a space that breathes, perspires and froths, in full bloom.”

Valentina Soana has studied architecture at the University of Rome “Sapienza” (2005-2008), at the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, Madrid (2008-2009) and the Architectural Master Program at KTH Royal Institute of Technology (2009-2011). She has also been an intern at EMERGENT Architects in Los Angeles.

Project: Mother-And-Child Prison – Children in prison, good for the child, mother and society

Rebecca Edwards Mannheimer; Project: Mother-And-Child Prison; Entrance

Rebecca Edwards Mannheimer; Project: Mother-And-Child Prison; Entrance

“The view of what is best for the child when the mother is incarcerated has changed. Studies have shown that it is better for the child to stay with his/her mother in prison, than to be separated from her and placed in foster care. A recent amendment to “The law of children accompanying mothers in institutions” has enabled a new vision for the Swedish Probation Service. My aim with this project is to contribute to the current important and heated debate on the topic.”

Rebecca Edwards Mannheimer from Gothenburg Sweden began studying at the School of Architecture KTH in Stockholm 2005. During her studies she spent a year working under Jonathan Sergison and Valerio Olgiati at the Accademia di Architectura di Mendrisio in Switzerland, and practiced one year at White Architects in Stockholm.
